Fake Robot Baby Provokes Real Screams
Uncanny valley, heard of it? No worries, you're knee-deep in it right now. It's the revulsion you feel to robots, prostheses, or zombies that try, but don't quite duplicate their human models. As the robot becomes more humanlike, however, our emotional response becomes increasingly positive and empathetic. Unfortunately, the goal of Osaka University's AFFETTO was to create a robot modeled after a young child that could produce realistic facial expressions in order to endear it to a human caregiver in a more natural way. Impressive, sure, but we're not ready to let it suckle from our teat just yet.

verizon iphone shipping
The No. 1 U.S. mobile service started taking online orders for its Apple Inc iPhone at 3 a.m. EST on Thursday, a week before it is due to hit its store shelves. Verizon Wireless had said it was preparing for heavy demand. Spokeswoman Brenda Raney said the company was pleased with how the online system had performed and that "the majority of customers have been able to process their orders with no problems." However, this was not the case for everybody.
"We are aware that some customers have received error messages and we are working through the issues with the individuals to ensure they get their order placed," Raney said.
Verizon's launch of online sales ended AT&T Inc's more than three-year hold on U.S. operator distribution of the popular device.
When AT&T and Apple launched pre-orders of the iPhone 4 in June last year, heavy demand caused technical problems on both companies' websites.

Apple says that its app store has hit the 10 billion downloads mark.
The milestone, announced on Apple Inc.'s website Saturday, arrives as the company's hugely popular smart phone is likely to become even more popular with the addition next month of Verizon Wireless as a carrier.
The company has sold tens of millions of iPhones since the device launched in 2007 and continues to expand the use of apps with its iPad tablet computer. Its app store has drawn an army of software developers hoping to piggyback on the company's success. The store now boasts more than 300,000 different programs that can be used on the iPhone and the iPad.

Most Awesome New iPhone App
This app rocks. It translates languages automatically without an internet connection. So for instance you and your honey are on the beach in Spain and you happen to see this sign. Yeah OK like you would be looking at this sign, but you get the picture. It’s called the World Lens. So no need to spend all that money on learning how to speak Spanish or French. Now we wonder if we can get our money back from Rosetta Stone?
